My cousin and I welcomed our babies on the same day — yet she never anticipated what would unfold 18 years afterward. On that day, my cousin Olivia and I gave birth at the same hospital, just three doors apart on the same floor. Initially, everyone found it to be an amusing coincidence. That was until my daughter reached the age of five. At that point, people began to observe peculiarities. She resembled NOTHING like her father. Conversely, Olivia’s daughter POSSESSED MY EYES. Even the identical tiny birthmark located behind her ear. Every family get-together felt peculiar. With each passing year, the resemblances became increasingly undeniable. However, whenever someone brought it up, Olivia would chuckle and remark, “Maybe we just have stronger genes.” Then she would swiftly shift the conversation. I attempted to persuade myself that I was merely imagining things. Until ONE NIGHT, when our daughters were seventeen. I inadvertently overheard Olivia’s husband having a heated discussion with someone. I can still recall EVERY WORD. “Stop talking about it!” “What if she finds out?” A chill ran through my veins. The following morning, I discreetly arranged for DNA tests. I reassured myself that I was being absurd. PARANOID. Yet when the RESULTS arrived three weeks later, I found it hard to breathe.
