“This is a family matter,” Celeste hissed.

“No,” I said through the door, finally speaking. “It became a legal matter at 9:14.”

Silence.

Then my father’s voice came from farther down the hallway, weary and thin. “Mara, please. Open the door. Let’s talk.”
