I drove eighteen hours in an old semi-truck to watch my daughter become an Army officer. But before the ceremony was over, a three-star general noticed the worn leather band on my wrist—and suddenly stopped speaking.

on his sleeve, coughing in the back of my cab while I pushed an engine that was already dying. I remembered telling him to stay awake. I remembered him grabbing my arm and asking my name.

I hadn’t thought about it in years.

“I didn’t know your name,” I said quietly.

“I know,” he replied. “But I never forgot yours.”
