At 21 years old, my husband took me to a field and cut off both of my hands… But what happened afterward made an entire country remember my name.

A sharp farming tool.

My body understood before my mind could accept it. I told myself he only wanted to frighten me. I kept repeating to myself that no man would truly destroy his wife over two pieces of cloth.

I was wrong.

When we reached the empty field, there was no one nearby. No women. No neighbors. No one who could stand between his anger and me.

He turned to me and asked,

“Which hand did you use to take the cloth?”

My mouth went dry.

The rest can be found on the next page.

“With my right,” I whispered.

The way he looked at my hand told me everything. He hadn’t taken me there to question me. He had taken me there to punish me.

What happened next divided my life into two parts: the young woman who walked into that field, and the woman who left it carrying the weight of what had been done to her.

I won’t describe every detail. Some acts of cruelty are already horrifying enough without covering them in blood. I remember falling. I remember the earth against my dress. I remember looking at my husband, hoping to see remorse appear on his face.

It never did.

And in the middle of that horror, I raised my other hand toward him and spoke the words people would repeat for years:

“If you’re going to leave me like this, take this one too. What am I supposed to do in this world with only one hand?”

For a moment, I thought he would stop.
