They stood on a beach at sunset, crying over three clouds of blue smoke like they had witnessed a miracle. I was happy for them. I even paid for my parents’ hotel because Dad said money was tight. Then my wedding came one month later. Two hours away. Same state. Same highway. Same people. And suddenly, everyone was exhausted. Mom said travel was too much after Florida. Dad said driving at night made his back hurt. Caleb said his wife was too emotional and needed the family nearby. My aunt said weddings were stressful but babies were different. Babies were different. Apparently, so was I. The night before my wedding, I sent one last message to the family group chat. I hope someone comes. I saved seats for all of you. Nobody replied for forty minutes. Then Caleb sent a thumbs-up emoji. At the chapel, Andrew’s mother quietly moved flowers onto the empty pews so the photographer would not capture the absence too clearly. His sister held my bouquet when my hands started shaking. His father walked beside me halfway down the aisle, then stepped back so I could finish alone with dignity. During the vows, I did not cry. When the minister asked who gave me away, I said, “I came here by choice.” Andrew squeezed my hands. At the reception, my phone buzzed once. Mom: Hope it was beautiful. Send pictures.
